kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:51 Hi Linda and Susan. Are you there? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:52 Yes-wow your whole transcript just raced across the top of the Explorer blue bar! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:53 Isn't
that cool? There are a couple of clunky things about Zoho chat, but I
do like that thing that goes across the top of the screen. My
hard drive crashed this morning, so I am working on an older home
computer with a slower Internet connection. I may be a little delayed
as we're taling. I mean, talking. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:55 I'm here again, too! Jane • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:55 Susan - have you participated in a chat before? Hi Jane! Good to see you. Sorry I wasn't around today to talk. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:55 I
was just in SEMLS and saw a few more items that you had posted; was
going to add a comment to Vicky's Mock Caldecott since I got a pop 3
pop-up but the computer made this loud warning noise. No I never have! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:56 Well,
it can sometimes get confusing when there are a lot of people. If you
have a lot to say, you can just type the first two sentences and then
add a ... to let people know you are still talking. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:56 The thought of my hard drive crashing is like freezing my brain! MUST back this stuff up! • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:57 Kathy
- The workshop was great. The rainy ride wasn't. Sorry you couldn't
come in, but you were lucky you didn't have to go out. Most of my
questions seem to be resolved or resolving now.... • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:57 Because
of the delay, there will sometimes be two conversations going at the
same time. If you're replying to somebody, it's a good idea to post
their name at the beginning of the message so that they know you're
responding to them. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:57 Susan-
I finally invested in an external hard drive for my Mac, and my son
backed everything up for me once. I need to do it again! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 18:58 Susan - Most of my files and e-mail are on a server at work so I didn't lose much. Just the music that didn't fit on my iPod. Jane - Glad you enjoyed the workshop. Barbara is a good trainer. Hi Linda. Are you on now? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:00 Kathy - I forgot to mention yesterday that the 24/7 Reference is my other experience with chat.... • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:00 Before
we get started with the discussion, I just wanted to find out if
anybody is having any technical difficulty with the class that they
need help with. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:00 We
spoke yester day at my lib. dept meeting about knocking off some of our
'fluffier' meetings and actually all learning how to back things up
correctly. We wear so many hats and are stretch so thinly but we MUST
do that. Susan • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:01 Jane - That's right! You did that when Bridgewater was still a regional reference center, right? Backing up is essential. We've had several hard drives go in our office. And our server crashed a couple of years ago. Now
that we've tried a few of these Web 2.0 tools, what do you think are
the ones you're most likely to use when the class is over? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:02 Kathy-I
will have a better handle on everything next week; when I hit snags I
have had to let them go and will start from scratch while I'm off next
week. Have the basics I THINK but on a couple of assignments things did
not show up like they did on other peoples'. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:02 Kathy-
Yes! It was interesting. We found it frustrating that so many people
assumed they were talking to their local librarian about local issues
and didn't get the concept of a more global library! Also re backing
up, the new little flash drives are good... • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:03 Susan
- I will be out of state next week, but I will periodically be checking
e-mail. So if you run across any trouble, feel free to send me an
e-mail. It may take me a little longer to respond, but I will. Welcome Kathy K. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:04 K-did not check today but did sign up for technorati this weekend but my name never appeared on the side bar...???? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:04 Susan-
I noticed that too....Some of my feeds didn't look like the others. I
had missed a step. Also, I'm on a Mac, so that may factor in. I'll keep
fine-tuning it while Kathy's on break. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:05 I was just asking everybody which Web 2.0 tool they think they're most likely to use when this class is over. Susan - Which sidebar are you talking about? On the wiki? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:07 K-yesterday
at our meeting, in the room w/ boxes, sink and table....we saw our
media center new web pg. I worked on an ancient laptop the libn was
able to get from her principal and made my 1st post on our web page and
did links. Kathy it has not been published yet but Debbie said I could
give you the passwords to see what I did. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:07 Kathy-
I'll keep blogging and using Flickr and contributing to Wikis. I still
need to do Facebook and MySpace accounts. I've become addicted to You
Tube! I really want to do some creative writing on a blog as well, but
once it's out there you lose ownership.... Susan, do you mean the
sidebar where it shows our RSS subscriptions • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:07 Yes under where our blogs are on the right hand side • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:08 I
may try to use blogging in some way related to our summer reading
program. I did have a bit of confusion when I tried to start a new blog
after running into problems with Flickr, and thinking it might help to
just start over. I thought I had started another blog with different
passwords, etc., but somehow it just added to my existing blog. How
would I start a new and different blog just for the library? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:08 Susan: the feed that we had to provide Kathy to get that up on the sidebar was very long. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:09 I'm just looking now. I have a link to your http://blackeyedsewsan.wordpress.com/ blog under the Participant blog headings. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:09 Kathy
K: I somehow got a feed onto my son's Google account because the page
came up as his rather than mine. He's probably puzzled by Jessamyn's
page! • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:10 One
thing I noticed is that I am more aware of the multitude of little
symbols that I never noticed before; when you're not aware, your eye
just skips over them. I think I will probably do something on
del.icio.us in retirement next year (if I EVER get my papers pulled!)
Susan • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:11 Our
staff seems to be exploring new technologies on their own but bringing
ideas together. Its really been exciting to share experiences. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:11 Kathy
- Once you log into WordPress, click on My Dashboard. It will say
something like Welcome Back Kathy with the name of your blog
underneath. There is a link there that says Register Another Blog. Linda
- that's interesting. I think a lot of that is happening in Taunton
too. It would be great to see what would happen if an entire staff from
one library did this class at one time, the way they did it in
Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Susan
- I notice the same thing whenever I try something new. I never noticed
the RSS buttons until I did a class in RSS and then they were
everywhere. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:13 Kathy - Thanks, I'm sure that's not what I did. I'm not even sure exactly how I did it. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:14 I
am wishing I used del.icio.us more. All of the readings for our next
session were bookmarked on the computer that crashed. If I had used
del.icio.us, ti would be not problem. Kathy - what do you think you'll be doing with the Summer Reading blog? Jane-
that's really funny about your son's Google account. Maybe he'll want a
career in libraries after reading Jessamyn's blog for a while. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:15 Susan
- I'm noticing that to. On the websites for colleges where my son's
applying, I actually knew what the RSS symbol meant. Felt so cool! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:16 I apologize for my typos. ![]() • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:16 One
thing I noticed when I first got on del.icio.us (and please don't
go...hmmm must be her age!) was the amount of nudity .... how do those
people get away with it and not get dunned for lack of a better term to
keep the ball rolling! • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:17 We
were thinking of having people take pictures of wildlife they see in
Plympton or on vacation. I thought if they could post to Flickr with a
given tag, we could download their pictures to the blog. Am I getting
that right? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:17 KathyL:
That's true about Delicious as a way to save (back up) personal
bookmarks. I'm still using old style bookmarks. I guess I'm a little
paranoid about making something personal public. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:18 Susan - I've never noticed that on del.icio.us before. Where did you see it? On the home page? Jane - did you know there is a way to make some del.icio.us bookmarks private? Kathy
- that would work. You could also use the Flickr widget on your blog.
If you go into presentation and then click on Widgets, you can drag the
Flickr widget into your sidebar. It then asks for the RSS feed for the
page you want to add from Flickr. You would find that from the Flickr
page for that tag. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:20 Blam!
right as I entered on the home page on my first trip in! Whoa...I
thought... then found quilting/sewing/soft toys/embroidery and NO
NUDITY! sbr • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:20 KathyK:
that sounds like an application of Flickr's tags that would work from
my understanding of tagging. Kathy L: Yes, I guess I saw that somewhere
along the way (making delicious bookmarks private) Can you reiterate it
easily here? • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:20 Kathy:
The newly dubbed Techie Library Chicks has been created at our library.
Saturday night 12 staff memebers went out to dinner and brought their
gadgets... • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:20 Jane, give me a second... • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:21 wireless phones, ipods and laptops and shared tips on all. More meetings are planned...over dinner • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:22 Kathy-when
you post the transcripts to this is it to all of us so we'd know how to
do that bookmark thing for privacy? Or only to people that couldn't
participate? • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:22 If
you log into del.icio.us and click on settings, you can then click on
"private saving" under the Bookmarks heading. You then want to check
allow private saving of bookmarks. When you add a bookmark to
del.icio.us after changing the setting, there will be an option to mark
the bookmark as private. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:23 Linda, can others participate in your group? • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:23 I'll post it to the wiki for everybody to see. Because
you are participating in the chat, you will also be able to get to the
transcript if you return here. Do you see the transcripts link on the
left? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:24 Linda-I
think that techie idea is so cool! someone my age was hooked up to an
ipod and I said lordy how did you know how to do that....answer always
is 'my child did it for me!!!' • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:24 Linda - that's a great idea! And it sounds like it makes it a lot of fun! • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:25 Susan - I know that feeling. My son just told me we should really have a vent server for this discussion • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:25 It was a soft introduction...not too overwhelming • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:26 KathyL: Thanks for the private bookmark info. I'll try it. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:26 How do you all feel about the idea of allowing patrons or students to interact with your blogs or edit content on a wiki? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:26 oh right-my transcript is there....VENT server? WHAT is that now or is that a postscript to # 5!? • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:26 I have to admit I don't know what a vent server is either. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:27 Susan - he says it allows you to hook up mikes, so you can talk. He uses it on World of Warcraft • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:27 A quick Google search indicates that it costs money, though. And I've been able to do this entire class on free technology. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:27 My
son also loaded my new Ipod from our Itunes and created separate
folders, etc. He's doing all these shortcut commands that take him 2
minutes to do what would take me an hour! Do you think he meant EVENT
server? Not that I know what that would be! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:28 But on the other hand, I was thinking of using Skyp for these discussions. Have any of you heard of that? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:28 This really is the JETSONS! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:29 I meant to say Skype! I'm usually a better typist than I have been tonight. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:29 Did Jessamyn mention that one? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:29 Kathy-spoke
w/ my principal at Bernazzani and we want to do a comment for parents
to ask ??? about the literature contest in May. Will do a link to my
blog. Interesting my black-blackeyedsewsan -blog when forwarded to CAB
to show principal arrived in a white format and all in a row-no
columns. Boy I am really getting so much more speedier typing these
days! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:29 I think she did. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:30 We
were thinking a blog would work OK for the library, but were a little
leery of the wiki format, where it would have to be checked fairly
often for content (We're only open 3 days a week) • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:30 Susan - it's amazing how good my son is getting at typing. And he's only 6!!! Kathy
- when you're the administrator of a wiki, you can be notified whenever
a wiki page is updated. But I've found that it doesn't always work in
PBWiki. It does work pretty well in Zoho, though. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:31 6!!! is he also loading ipods too...how can he avoid being a technie w/ you for a mom! s • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:32 I've been getting emails every time someone updates the class wiki. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:32 And
you can set the wiki up so that only certain people add or edit
content. Most libraries I've talked to have been interested in a wiki
for staff communication, but I love the idea of the community wikis. Susan - but his father is a Luddite, so I suppose he could go either way. ![]() • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:32 How does a transcript work? How can we retreive it? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:33 Someone also suggested using a wiki format for procedures and policy manual that are constantly evolving. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:34 So
Skype is like Instant Messaging, but uses audio and video. So it's like
talking over the phone, but by using your computer. And if you use a
webcam, you can see the other person. It really is the Jetsons! If you
call somebody on your Skype Buddy list, it's free. Call to actual
telephones cost money, but it's fairly affordable... • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:34 Wow. So how do you use it? • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:35 It's
a great service for people with friends and family in other countries.
I would like to do something at SEMLS with Skype, but I decided against
doing it for this class because it require everyone to download
software. You
can just hook up a microphone on your computer. Or you can get a
headset that includes a microphone. I have a little box that connects
your real phone to the computer for using Skype, but I never use it. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:36 My
poor computer is so cluttered up with downloads and plugins, etc. I
keep trying new browsers. I love Opera, with the Analog clock! • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:36 Actually
when Norton ran my weekly scan I was afraid to see how many files I had
accrued with everything we have downloaded this class, but was pleased
to see there really was a relatively small # of new files! s • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:36 Linda,
once this chat is done, it should show up when you click on the
Transcripts link in the left column. I am also going to copy and paste
it, and then post it to the blog. Jane - Opera is great! I really should use it more, but I just never acquired the habit. How about the issue with multiple accounts? Have you all been able to manage remembering the logins for each of the accounts? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:38 What is Opera...have not heard of that one yet~susan • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:38 Kathy L: Re: Opera. Again, that's something my son was using! He's a senior in High School, though.... • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:38 I bought a notebook to record all my log in passwords • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:39 I
finally organized all the log-ins on one page in a notebook. What do
others do? Do you use the same log-ins for all accounts, or is that not
recommended? • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:39 Susan: I think you can just Google it. It has a big red O for an icon. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:39 Susan,
it's a browser - an alternative to using IE or Firefox. It's been
around for years, and I had heard great things about it, but it cost
money, and I'm a little frugal. It's free now. It can do some cool
things, and I find that Web pages load faster on it. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:40 Linda-good
girl...! they all of a sudden got out of control and I had to get a new
password for this to join the chat. So much for efficiency! s. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:40 Kathy K and Linda: I keep a notebook, too. My logins vary. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:41 I
try to use the same logins, even though it isn't recommended. But I
have about three levels of logins. One is for work-related stuff, where
I don't mind sharing my password. Another is for things like these Web
2.0 accounts. And then I have a top-secret login for financial stuff,
like my bank and credit card. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:42 Opera
has lots of cool addons, though the one for Pandora Radio seemed to
display a message about it being unstable. That would never do.
Speaking of multiple browsers, sometimes I'll have three going at once,
Safar, Firefox and Opera, and minimize them so I don't have to go back
or start a new page. Method to my madness... • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:42 Our
media secretary 'uptown' just sent us an email about the passwords
people choose and how a majority of them are just what schisters (sp?)
can figure out and break their code. It was an amazing document! s • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:43 There
are a couple of new services now that basically manage all of your
accounts for you. I haven't tried them yet, because it just seems like
one more account to me. But I may try it as I keeping creating accounts
on the Web sites. One is called Digsby. I can't remember the names of
others, but you'll be able to find them in the transcript from
yesterday's class. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:44 Susan:
I told a friend about our Wordpress blogs, and she googled my wordpress
name and it came up with other references to me using that name. I
imagine hackers do that to target people.... Kathy L. Wasn't one of them 8hands? • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:45 I
once read a recommendation to use mnemonic devices when choosing
passwords. So I could use a password like KLiatcaS, which would stand
for Kathy Lussier is a technology consultant at SEMLS. (That's not one
of my passwords, by the way!) Jane - yes, that was one of them. And the Digsby one is an invitation-only thing right now, because it is still in testing. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:46 A
more mundane question about the RSS feed Google account - I couldn't
figure out how to reorganize and retag the items I'd chosen to have
feeds from, once I'd put them in folders. I'd like to change the way
they're organized? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:47 Right!
that was the upshot of the article-when my daughter was at Houghton
Mifflin her password was worse than greek but she said she learned it
after a while. Probably like Czeck-lots of syllables. Wow...did
you all realize that we are all different colors? Am trying to read and
type so quickly that I just noticed I'm Blue! s • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:48 Kathy - when you log into Google Reader, there is a link at the bottom of your folders that says "manage subscriptions."... • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:49 Speaking
of mnemonic devices... Sometime you remember the device better than the
information to which it refers. Like: Campbell's Onion Soup Develops
Mysterious Pains in Peter was a way we remembered the Geological Eras
(Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, etc. But then they reclassified it a
little... • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:50 You
will then see a list of your feeds. At the far right of each feed,
there is a dropdown menu that says "change folders" You can select a
new folder from there. • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:51 Kathy - Thanks • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:51 Susan - you're beige on my screen! Mother Very Easily Made Another Jelly Sandwich Under No Protest. Do you know what that one is for? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:52 Et tu Brutus...Kathy YOU are beige on mine! • • kathykeirstead says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:52 I've got to sign off - thanks to you all. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:52 Are there are tools you've explored thus far that you don't like or don't think you'll ever use? Thanks for stopping in Kathy! • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:53 I actually will be able to answer that better after next week. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:54 Kathy L: I'm stumped! Have a great February Vacation! • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:54 I haven't heard much enthusiasm for Technorati. Thanks
Jane! By the way, I mentioned that I would post an assignment this
Friday even though it is vacation week. In case anyone wants to skip
ahead. But with my computer crashing and a nasty virus, it may take a
little longer to pull it together. But I will still be posting it early. • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:56 Flickr is a great resource. I enjoyed my time spent on that assignment. I like wikis too. I can see lots of uses for wikis. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:56 It
may not be until the end of the weekend, though. Since you have two
weeks to complete this one, I'm hoping it's okay with everyone. • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:56 I'll try to catch up with the extra time. • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:56 My
daughter leaves for So. Africa tomorrow (does not want to put all her
$$$ in her brain like her mom! says she) so need to go give hugs and
write a note to the pilot to stay awake for the 26 hr. trip. Will enjoy
reading everyone's postings and have a great week Kathy and thanks for
doing this! S • • murphvanv says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:56 Bye for now! • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:57 Have a great trip. • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:58 Wikis
are great, but I think the hardest part of a wiki is the initial setup.
If you don't organize the structure well, people can start to
haphazardly post things in a disorganized way. Imagine how hard it was
to organize wikipedia. Thanks Jane! Any other questions before we sign off? • • susanriley says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:59 Guess not ! thanks~ • • kmlussier says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:59 Thanks Linda! I'm looking forward to it. I'll see you all on the wiki! • • lfitz says Wed, 13 Feb, 19:59 Bye now. Thank you. | ||
