kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 12:59 Hi Jane. Are you there? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:02 OK, now I'm in the right tab! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:03 I see you now. Great! I'm not sure how many people we're getting today. There was another person who said she would be here, and then a couple who said they might be able to drop in. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:04 I'm hoping the weather isn't too bad for my trip to SEMLS tomorrow. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:04 That's right. We're supposed to get snow. Check the school closings before going out. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:04 So, if Lakeville is closed, SEMLS is too, right? • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:05 Yes,
but it's actually Freetown-Lakeville. Some stations list it under
Lakeville, but some others only put it under Freetown-Lakeville. How are things going? It looks like you figured a few things out since I saw you last week. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:06 Yes. Now I'm obsessing about all the little details, like adding badges and buttons. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:06 That's good! At first, it's just important that you get the stuff set up. But then doing the badges is the fun stuff. At least for me. ![]() • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:07 There is one called Pangea Day that looks cool. I
am not sure if my feeds are OK, because some of them I clicked on
rather than typing in the whole code. It looks like I got lots of them. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:08 But
you're using Firefox right? If you click on the feeds, you should just
get a screen that lets you pick Google Reader and then adds it to your
feed. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:10 OK,
I think that was what I did! My problem is that I have to keep going
back and looking at the bread crumbs I left behind. It always seems to
take me 3 times through to get a skill in my head! I think I got Feedburner in OK, so now I have to try it out. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:11 But,
because you're figuring it out yourself, I'm hoping it will stick
better than it does when I walk people through it in a Face to Face
class. Did you say this is your first time doing a chat? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:12 Years
ago when I first had a Mac, they had something called eworld and I did
a little then, but I basically haven't done IMing or chat since then,
on my old Performa in 1994 or so! Dale
and Susan and I have been comparing notes a little. We all realize now
that we had so little time at Bridgewater to learn and PRACTICE these
skills. In the final days (years) we had to cover other departments,
circ, etc. and didn't have a chance to do professional work! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:14 Well, when you have a bigger group, it can get a little confusing. Sometimes,
if you have a lot to say, you can just type out the first two sentences
and then type a ... to let them know that you're still talking. Because
of the delay, there are usually a couple of conversations going on at
the same time. If you're responding to somebody, it's useful to type
their name first so that they know you're talking to them. Of course, you don't need to do that when it's just the two of us. ![]() • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:17 Sorry, I just multitasked and answered the phone! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:17 I do that all the time! When I IM with my Mom, I usually leave her in mid-conversation. So what tool have you liked best so far? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:19 I liked the wiki exercises I did yesterday. I don't really like Technorati, but I like the Wordpress blog. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:20 I've
never been a big user of Technorati. I think some people like it if
they want to be alerted whenever a certain topic is being talked about.
But I have found it useful for this class to be able to track whenever
somebody has posted to their blog. It's easier than visiting each blog. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:21 Susan was here one day and we looked up two old colleagues blogs on it, so it was useful in that respect. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:21 I
think wikis are pretty easy to use. I think the hardest part of doing a
wiki is organizing the content so that it makes sense. The
person setting it up really needs to create that structure so that
people just don't start adding stuff in an unorganized way. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:22 Susan
and Dale had created a pbwiki awhile back that was a book discussion.
They took the BW association off it, so I may use it for my other wiki
exercise! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:22 Really? Do you have a link to it? Hi Kim. Are you there? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:23 I'm looking... I still have too much paper! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:24 That's okay. Send it along when you find it. • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:24 Hi, I am trying to join the chat. - Kim • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:24 What do you think about having a blog or wiki where patrons could add comments or, in a wiki's case, edit content? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:24 ok • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:25 Hi Kim. It's just a couple of us today. I was just talking to Jane about which tools she has liked best so far. • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:25 I think a blog would be better for basic information, so students could not change the content. - • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:26 Hi Kim. They could still add comments, though. Jane • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:26 So, far I like the blog and the RSS feed the best • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:26 Do you think the comments would need to be moderated first? • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:27 That's true about the comments, so might not be the best for students. But, it seems to work at other schools for book reviews • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:27 You don't need to enable comments on the blog, but I don't think it's a bad idea to give them some way to interact with it. • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:28 Yes,
I could moderate the comments. I did not think of that. There is just
so much to learn with these new technologies. Yikes! This class has
been eye-opening, about what I do not know. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:28 I changed my settings so I don't have to approve comments. Can't remember how I did it! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:29 With
My Own Cafe, we've actually found that the teens do a pretty good job
of self-policing the discussions. But it's a smaller group of teens
than you would have using a blog in a school. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:29 Kim, are you at Duxbury High? • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:29 I am at durfee high school • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:30 I used to do the Young Adult job at Bridgewater Public Library. I'm continually amazed at what kids can do. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:30 Kim
- you said you liked the RSS feeds. It took me a couple of tries with
RSS before I really started consistently using my Reader. Do you find
that you're going to the Reader everyday? • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:31 Yes,
They are very adept at the technology. Also, being my first year, I am
still trying to sort things out and the library culture. Kmlussier, • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:33 Jane - have you been using your Google Reader account much? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:33 Kathy, I have, but I seem to get so many of them at once! Kathy, Susan and Dale's wiki was called Dreamreader. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:34 It
can be a little overwhelming if you have a lot of feeds going into it.
I've found that organizing themselves into folders is useful. I have a
folder called First Reads where I put the feeds that I want to read
everyday. I never put feeds in there that produce too much "stuff" because I know it will just overwhelm me with too much stuff. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:35 Kathy,
good idea.. kind of like organizing folders on the desktop. Maybe I'll
edit my feeds. I tend to go overboard with everything! • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:35 Kathy, • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:35 I
go to the other folders when I have time. I actually have my
library-related feeds scrolling across the bottom of my screen in a
ticker because I never seem to have time to read them. But if I see a
headline that interests me, I'll click on it. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:36 How do you make a ticker work? • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:36 Kathy - I am wondering about the ticker as well • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:37 I use a Firefox extension called RSS ticker. You can find it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2325 I
know Yahoo has a ticker as well, but I've never tried it. With the
Yahoo ticker, I think you have to set up the feeds on a My Yahoo page
first and then download the ticker. kathykeirstead turned on guest access Hi Kathy. Are you there? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:39 Kathy L , thanks. I would feel so cool if I do that! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:39 We were just talking about which tools we've liked best so far. I was also talking about how I manage my RSS feeds. I've
seen a couple of comments on the wiki about managing way too many
accounts. Has it been difficult managing all the different logins and
remembering where to go for each one? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:41 Kathy,
just another question on technique.... If I want to add a long piece of
html code to, say, the Wordpress Badges, is it best to cut and paste
into a sticky note (mac) or should i type out the whoe long phrase of
code... • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:41 Kathy
L - Yes! I try to keep the same passwords and logins with variations.
But, it gets difficult at times. also, sometimes I feel there is too
much personal information out in cyberspace. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:42 I
would cut and paste whenever I can. The only time I found that cutting
and pasting didn't work was when following instructions to put an RSS
link on your WordPress blog. The quotation marks messed it up. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:43 I
keep a notepad with abbreviations of the various logins/passwords to
refer to at my desk... I do worry when I notice I didn't log completely
out of one. For example, I had a link to Flickr on my blog that had me
logged in still! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:43 Kim
- There is way too much personal information in cyberspace. I think
that's a big thing with your students, trying to teach them what kind
of personal information is appropriate to put out there. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:44 Kathy and Kim, I agree. My son is applying to colleges, and I warned him about his vulnerability on social networking sites. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:44 I don't think teens realize that future employers can find this stuff, and that it can influence their hiring decision. Kim - did you say you're using Facebook? Or am I thinking of Rachel? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:46 Uh, oh.. here I am blogging while I'm out there job hunting. Better be careful! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:46 As
far as managing all of our accounts, I did a little research before the
chat. There are a couple of services now that just brings all of your
social networking stuff into one place and managers all of your
accounts. Digsby is a new one. But there's also one called 8hands and
another called Flock. I
haven't tired any of them yet, because it just seems like one more
thing to sign up for. But there may came a time when I need something
to help me manage all of this. I haven't seen you blog about anything that should hurt your job hunting...except maybe the Grateful Dead photo. :-) • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:48 Kathy L, I can't sing enough praises for the program with Jessamyn last week. She is the new Linda Braun! kathykeirstead added kathykeirstead added • • kimlavoie says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:48 Kathy, I am busy at the reference desk, so have to sign off • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:48 Jessamyn is great, and I hope we can bring her back again. But I wish we had a bigger turnout. OK Kim. Thanks for joining us! Kathy K - have you been able to get in. I've seen you there, but can't figure out if you're having trouble. Jane - do you think some of the things you've learned will help you in your job search? Are you thinking of ways you might be using some of these things in a library once you're back in one? • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:50 I'm not sure if I'm on now - had trouble figuring out how to add in. That seemed to work • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:51 There you are! It's so hard to see from here what's happening. It's so much easier in a face-to-face class where I can actually see what's happening. • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:51 Well, since this session is almost over, I'll try to log on tomorrow night. I'm just a little slow with these things • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:52 We'll just call this your trial run! • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:52 Kathy
L, Absolutely. I'd really like to work in an academic library, and I
think these skills would stand me in excellent stead! Actually, I took
that Deadhead thing off my blog because I wasn't sure about using that
person's photo. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:52 Now that you know how to get in. • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:52 The wiki exercise went really easily though. It's sinking in slowly! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:52 Interesting...where did you find the photo. On Flickr? • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:53 Yes, but after I had logged in to the site that was streaming the concert at 1 in the morning! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:53 I
thought the wiki exercise would be a nice one to do after the RSS one.
I find it's difficult to explain RSS in an in-person class, so I can
imagine it must have been difficult to grasp online. • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:54 I find I'm forgetting to link things together by using the tags • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:54 If
the Flickr has a Creative Commons licensing logo, you should be able to
use it. Otherwise, I would try not to re-use a photo. Although posting
it to your blog may be okay since you aren't actually copying it.
You're just linking to it. I've been visiting everyone's blogs periodically anyway so that I can catch up on any posts that didn't show up in Technorati. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:55 During
the RSS weekI really was having flashbacks to Simmons, when, even
though I had completed a previous M.Ed. in Counseling/Student Personnel
at Northeastern, I felt like a complete idiot when I took Cataloging! • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:55 Kathy
- The tagging may make more sense when you're just doing it to add
keywords to your posts. The semls20 tag is great for tying the stuff
together for this class, but you won't always be using them in this way. Jane - you'll be happy to know that most people in my RSS classes have the same feeling. I
think I'm going to wrap the chat up, but I first wanted to check in to
see if there's anything I can do to improve the classes. I'm about to post another evaluation, but I would love any feedback that would make it easier for you. • • murphvanv says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:58 OK. I'll see you tomorrow, weather permitting. Jane • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:58 I
think for me, just the nature of navigating around all the different
sites and pages has made it a bit cumbersome, but you've organized it
well, so that you can go back over things easily. • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:58 See you tomorrow Jane. • • kathykeirstead says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:59 I'll be on for tommorrow night's chat too. Thanks Kathy. See you then • • kmlussier says Tue, 12 Feb, 13:59 Yes,
it is a lot of new sites to do at once. But once the class is over, my
hope is that you'll probably gravitate to one or two things that you
found the most useful. "See" you tomorrow Kathy. Thanks for stopping in. | ||
