Hi Kathy, I'm here. I was looking in Facebook to see if we were meeting there instead.

lfitz says

I have that skittering too.

kmlussier says

I noticed that earlier, but it seems to be OK now. But my computer is acting a little funky. It just booted me out of the chat and then let me back in.
Let's see how it goes.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:02
I had to go bad a few weeks and find my directions for entering this chat.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:02
I realized rather late that I should have sent instructions out again. But I posted a link to the wiki about a half-hour ago.
Susan - are you in an elementary school?
I was just thinking that Facebook and MySpace isn't very relevant to the under-13 group since you need to be 13 to join. But there are a bunch of social networking sites cropping up for the younger crowd. Since they are for kids, there is much less personal information involved.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:04
Before others come I'd like to ask a ??? Had SO MUCH TROUBLE w/ Flickr so decided to try again from scratch. I had sent you a copy/paste when the pop3 came up. Anyhow tried to redo side bar this aft. and added Flickr. Had all these naked bellies of pregnant women on my site!!! s

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:05
When you add Flickr to your blog, you need to make sure that you click on the little icon in the widget to add the URL for your Flickr photos.
If you don't, WordPress just posts random photos.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:05
Quincy filters so much out that it is amazing
I dragged the icon into the sidebar site and hit save and that's when these 'beauties' popped up; almost had a stroke! Finally went back in & dragged flickr back out-

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:06
I must have done that alright because I didn't get naked belly pictures

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:07
Yes, most of the library teachers have trouble with filtering. I can understand it with something like MySpace and Facebook, but I think schools need to be more open to blogging sites. There is just so much potential for using them in the classroom.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:07
it has not been scrolling across the top like last time but Linda's message just did.
It is Big Brother! downtown~

Susan - if you try the flickr thing again, before you hit save, click on the little icon that has some lines going across it. You'll see there where you can add the URL for your flickr photos.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:08
Where are you a librarian, Susan?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:08
I think it's just a way to alert you that somebody has responded in case you are multitasking and have another window open while chatting.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:09
Before we finish I might need a real voice before the end! Yes-this is my 42nd year

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:10
I wanted to talk a little tonight about safety issues and about privacy. Safety was a big topic with MySpace last year because of some high-profile incidents with predators. For the most part, I think users use these sites without any problems, but there definitely is a concern about the type of information people share on these sites...

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:10
Where?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:11
If you starting using blogs or Facebook in your library or school, do you think there are ways you can promote safe use among your users?
And how do we get across to them that their personal information is being shared with the entire world, including future employers, spouses, etc.?

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:12
I do because they took out 14 computers and only gave me back 6 and 2 of those were broken! You can see everything-problem is I'm only there 2 days. Hard if there is not a full time staff member.
The other morning I had a stranger leave me 'have a good day' on my blog and that was kind of scarry at 6 a.m. I know we are out there but doing this for a course makes you think no one else will seek you out, I guess

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:14
After creating a facebook account (my 22 year old son is incredulous) I don't immediately see how a preditor can approach me. I would have to welcome the invitation for friendship.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:15
A 'have a good day' comment sounds like it could have come from a Spammer. It may just be an automated process, not a real human being. I don't know if that makes it less scary or scarier.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:15
Would the message on your blog leave information concerning the source or person?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:15
Linda - I have to say I love having my Mom on Facebook as my friend. We play Scrabulous with each other, kind of like Jessamyn and her Mom.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:16
it said an email like 'biblio' but the message was the same for each area so deleted all but one.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:16
I would use Facebook more if my mom was on it.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:16
I think Facebook is a little more closed than MySpace. I don't actually have a MySpace account, but I believe your profile is available by default to the world. You actually have to take the extra step of making your profile private if you don't want to make that information available.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:16
She is 86 and talking about buying a laptop

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:17
Kathy you got my NYT email about Scrabulous? still put it on my facebook.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:17
Facebook starts out as a private profile that nobody can see unless you actively add them as a friend.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:17
my mom's 87 and has dementia so no scrabulous for us.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:18
Yes- Scrabulous has been in the news a lot lately because they didn't pay any licensing fees to Hasbro. I stopped playing for a week because I didn't want it to be taken down while I was in the middle of a game. But I keep hearing they'll probably come to some kind of legal agreement.
A few years ago on the Vineyard, the local paper published information from the MySpace accounts of some of the teens on the Island. Everyone was outraged that the paper shared this "private" information. But a week later, almost every teen on the Vineyard has changed their profile to private.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:19
Did you all see the picture of the gal in all the paper/pink in 'my friends'? It was taken in an art museum, but she said at 2nd gr. lunch today...how was the opera yesterday from what are you doing now on facebook

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:20
I know that my picture is on MySpace from my son's 30th birthday party. I was photographed dancing with the guys. I have no choice that it is there and I don't know who else can see these pics. There should almost be some etiquette for these situations.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:20
People that hadn't heard last week were so incredulous...lil ol' me~
There are still some areas of our syllabus that have not been ironed out in my head; have tried but it is so frustrating when things repeatedly do not go right. I will try to get a SHORT list of the items that I think I would really use.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:22
Yes - you should get a person's permission before posting their photo to Flickr or MySpace, and I think I've even seen this in the Flickr guidelines somewhere.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:23
The Vineyard incident sounds like it was very effective in making the students realize their exposure

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:24
Random thought: if so many people have photos on Flickr but you can only save them to 'faves' why are they there? Exposure? No one else can do anything with them?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:25
Susan - I think that's one of my favorite things about Facebook. I can keep up on what all my friends are doing. My Mom says she knows more about what I'm doing now than she has in years.
Linda - you're right, but there's got to be a way to get this message through without exposing private information.
I think a real problem when it comes to sharing private information or following rules about posting photos without the subject's permission is that these values in the real world (not virtual) are learned from parents. But parents are just as confused about the rules as the kids.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:26
PLUS reading! I did a 2nd reading application since the what are you reading now will not let me change my book. No update button and if you click on the little button by the book jacket then it disappears. I am going to look like a slow reader!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:27
I've seen my daughter's MySpace account and she was fairly careful. I still wouldn't have used the pictures she did. I know she thinks its just her friends looking at it

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:27
I think the best advice on this subject for parents is to create accounts on these sites and to "friend" their kids. The kids don't like it, but they'll be a lot more careful about what they post.
Susan - are you talking about the Good Reads application?

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:28
Linda-I promised my daughter I wouldn't look at her pictures or she wouldn't have let me be 'her friend'
Kathy-afraid to loose you guys again. Will check~

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:29
I promise nothing

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:29
About Flickr Susan - I originally posted my photos there because you could set the privacy level for photos so that only friends or family could view them. I don't like posting pictures of my children for the entire world to see. However, my in-laws had too much trouble remembering how to log into Flickr, so I would up making them public after all.
I think a lot of it depends on the age of the children as well. When they're younger, it's probably a good idea to be on there. But you have to let them use their own judgement at some point.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:30
good girl! At the time I didn't have my 6 friends!!!! one of my nieces has over 600 friends! good gawd~decided she did not need me!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:30
That's a great idea for Flickr

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:31
We once had a teen on My Own Cafe complain that they hear too much from teachers about how they should keep information private on the Internet. You could tell she thought it was an annual lecture that they didn't need to hear it.
Are there other ways we can teach them these skills?

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:32
One of my other daughter's friend had pictures of her children, names, addresses etc. Is that called 'come get me?'!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:32
Using the Vineyard story as an example.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:32
That worries me.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:33
The one year I was at the vo-tech I felt that they really did not believe adults anyway. All-knowing in the way teens are~

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:34
I think that's the big thing - they think they know better than adults. I'm already getting that feeling from my son when I try to oversee the use of his under-12 social networking site - Club Penguin. But I'm lucky because that site sets up a lot of safeguards so that kids can't share personal information.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:34
They are the center of their own universes and feel invincible...even on the internet. I think that adults have to keep repeating the safety rules and someday it will stick.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:35
Although Facebook has been touted as being safer than MySpace, it has had its own problem with privacy concerns. Last fall, they started a new marketing model where you would shop on third-party Web sites, and, if you bought something, it would automatically publish it to your Facebook news feed.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:36
Kathy Is his computer the family one where you can monitor him? I always get nervous at school when the kids say their computer is in their room!
How did you find Club Penguin?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:37
I love using Facebook, but I'm always keeping my eye on these stories to make sure I can maintain my privacy as much as possible. If it takes so much work for me to do this, I can imagine how hard it would be for kids to keep on top of this.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:37
Even having this discussion. I am comfortable with what we are saying and feel that it is a private conversation. Its going into a transcript but also who else can view this? I think most useres get to a comfort level that makes them expose more

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:37
We only have a family computer, and I'm going to keep it this way for a long time. I'm not sure what I will do when he's a teenager.
Although the wiki is closed to comments and editing from outsiders, it can be viewed by anyone. It will be posted there.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:38
I was surprised when I added a comment to Deanna's wonderful picture in the museum that it wound up on MY page!

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:39
Susan - I learned about Club Penguin when the founder was interviewed on NPR. It was created by a father who was concerned about online safety for his kids. But it has since been bought by Disney. I need to come up with an idea like that!!!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:40
You could do it, Kathy

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:40
Bingo! I saw that there is now a monitoring device to put in cars so you will know where the teen is and how fast he is going! 'Teen: I feel it is such an invasion of my privace' WHAT? and he's driving his parent's car????

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:41
Susan - It wound up on the public part of your blog? Or did you see it in the behind-the-scenes area of the blog when you logged in? It will show you you're recent comments there.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:41
Public part on the right side

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:41
So now that we are reaching the end of the class, are there any unanswered questions you have or things you had hoped we would review in more depth?
Hmmm...I don't see it Susan.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:43
Kathy-one great thing is when I picked up my SLJ this month I actually knew what the articles were going to be about. There has been so much for newbies that I think a lot has to settle in and be able to use it. I LOVE del.icio.us and the tags. Terrific and think I will do a blog afresh

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:44
I think this class was enough for now. I need to impliment some of these resources to use what I've learned and remember everything. You did a tremendous amount of work in setting this all up, Kathy

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:44
It was fun! And I did "borrow" a lot from the Charlotte-Mecklenberg program.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:44
Today I accessed my RSS feeds to work on my book order

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:45
And I think the point of the program is really just to get a taste of these tools. It's up to you to figure out which ones you want to use further.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:45
RSS-that's what I have to start afresh on...was a crazy wk and then was trying to play poly-catchup since I started late

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:46
Linda - that's so cool about the RSS feeds. It took me a while to get going with RSS, but I feel lost without my feeds now.
Take your time Susan. I'll still be around even after the class officially ends.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:46
Great-thanks!

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:46
I find I have a hard time explaining RSS in my face-to-face classes. Doing it online is even more challenging. That's why I didn't schedule anything else for that week.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:47
Several of our staff members are friends on Facebook so we meet there occasionally. I think just being introduced to a few of these sources and seeing how they work has opened a new view for me. I am in the discussions at work and possibly will be oart of the implementation of some of these. Its coming

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:47
That's great Linda! I look forward to seeing what you guys do with this stuff.
It was a small group tonight, so I'm already done with the prepared questions I've had. Is there anything else you want to talk about before we sign off?

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:48
The flickr thing is what really bothers me that I cannot get it going. Am hoping since I entered 48 books onto my site that when people ask before you get the summer reading list out...any books for vacation I'll send them to Facebook!
Nope and my daughter arrived safely back from so. Africa. She was leaving the night we last met~thanks Kathy

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:49
Susan, why don't you send me a link to your Flickr page and I'll look at it? Is it that you can't post to the blog? Or is it something else?
You can send me the link via e-mail. No need to put it on the transcript.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:50
can't post. its that ending thing. did send it but will try it again w/out a pop3server!!!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:50
Last time we chatted you mentioned Technorati and how we liked it. I have to go back and look at it...it has faded from my memory

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:52
The week we did Technorati, it was one of three tools we were exploring. I remember from the comments on the wiki that people seemed to like Technorati the least. I really don't use Technorati that much, but I can see where it would be useful if you were tracking a particular tag in the blogosphere. It was useful to track the Learning 2.0 blog posts by using the semls20 tag.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:53
Now I remember. Thank you.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:53
I'm not big on keeping up with the latest news in the blogosphere, which is why I probably don't use Technorati much. I'm more inclined to subscribe to the feeds for the blogs I like most.
Susan, let's follow up via e-mail with the Flickr stuff, and I'll make sure we work it out.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:54
That would seem to cut down on the amount of data to go through

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:54
that's probably what I will be doing-when I read the # of millions that keep starting it staggers the imagination! Tried to do the toonie thing like Daisy & its still 'over there'. Could not seem to import it.

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:55
As an experiment, I once tried subscribing to an RSS feed from Technorati on recent blog posts with the tag of discipline. I was thinking of starting a parenting blog at the time. I must have gotten hundreds of posts per day.
I was going to try the toony thing to, but have been to busy catching up on work this week.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:56
What's the toony thing?

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:56
the quilting ones that come in through the quilt history list serve have comments that only # 6-8 per entry so that's do-able
Linda-Daisy made that 'alter-ego' and I made 2 for the quincy lit contest but couldn't get them to my blog

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:58
ah... an alter ego

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:58
Daisy posted it to her blog. http://thegamesafoot.wordpress.com/. She made a little cartoon alter-ego. I wanted to create one and use it as my new Facebook avatar.
If there are no more questions, I think I'm going to wrap things up. Have fun doing the audio/video stuff this week.

susanriley says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:59
Bye to you both!

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 19:59
I'll have to look at that. Kathy, will all the information from the class still be availalbe after this weekend if we need to catch up or review?

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 20:00
Yes - I rarely take my class materials down from the Web. They'll probably be up for as long as Zoho lets me keep them up.

lfitz says
Mon, 3 Mar, 20:00
That's great. Thank you both for the chat. Good night

kmlussier says
Mon, 3 Mar, 20:01

kmlussier says

Thanks for joining the chat!
