Spain is located mostly in south-western Europe on the Iberian peninsula. (A peninsula is a piece of land that is surrounded by water except for one side which is connected to the rest of the land.) Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean lie to the west. France is to the north-east. The capital city of Spain is Madrid, which is also the country’s largest city. Over 45 million people live in Spain.
The main language of Spain is Spanish, but Aranese, Basque, Catalan and Galician are also spoken there.
Spain is part of the European Union, which it joined on the 1st of January, 1986. This means that like a lot of countries in Europe, like France and Germany, they use the Euro there.
Spain has a monarchy, and the King of Spain is Juan Carlos I. The Prime Minister’s name is Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
Spain has a very rich culture. It has been influenced by many other cultures, including a Roman Catholic culture and a long and rich Islamic culture. There are still lots of cultural parts to the south of Spain that came from the Islamic times. Cordoba was the capital in Spain of the Umayyad dynasty. Spain also has many World Heritage Sites, more than most countries in the world.
Some amazing artists have also come from Spain, including Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso.
Spanish food is very influenced by the sea. Paella is a famous Spanish dish made with rice and different types of shellfish, with some meat and vegetables too. There are many other types of Spanish food and because there have been so many influences from different cultures, the food is also very varied.
Spain has recently done very well in sports. They won Euro 2008 (football) and Rafael Nadal recently won Wimbledon too.
