Blog Business Plan: LeveragingIdeas.com


Blog Mission:


LeveragingIdeas is more than a blog. It is a community and resource for those persons passionate about the process and implications of social media, entrepreneurship and venture capital.


Blog Purpose (Why I Write):


  1. Writing blog posts about new ideas I have forces me to document and think-out underlying models and identify future consequences. I enjoy the academic process of writing and thinking

  2. My posts are opportunities for me to add to the public discussions on topics that I care about and which I feel I can add value to

  3. LeveragingIdeas is a direct form of personal marketing, and indirect marketing for my companies and those companies I advise.


My Goals:


Immediate: Create a new design with a more appealing UI. Design something I am proud of and which serves as portfolio piece, highlighting the quality design work of HMG

Immediate: Boost Feedburner subscriptions to 150+

Immediate: 2-3 comments per post with a response time of < 5 hours

Long-term: Look for blog sponsorship or syndication opportunities (Federated Media)

Long-term: Post more often and have multiple authors (or more guest authors)



Target Audience:


  1. Venture Capital folks, in particular, those VCs investing or active in the social media and web 2.0 space

  2. Other entrepreneurs in the tech sector

  3. Folks interested in the financial aspect of startups (funding, strategy)

  4. People looking to understand who Sam Huleatt is, what my passions, interests and strengths are. This ranges from friends, to potential clients



General Blogging Strategy:


My posts will consist of several general types…


I am NOT interested in reviewing startups, or interviewing entrepreneurs – unless I have some particular reason to do so


Niche Subject Matter or Anecdotes:

I am passionate about wilderness, squash (the sport) and art. I hope to promote these personal passions in addition to my core subject matter


Posts Per Day:

Immediate: 1 quality post per day

Near Term: 1 quality post and 1-2 small observational or linking posts


Advertising: For the immediate future I will not advertise on my blog. I also will not accept payment for positive reviews, etc. However, in the future I am interested in exploring sponsorships, and/or content syndication with the proceeds being donated to charity


Other Models: Blogs I aspire to model LeveragingIdeas on include, Stowe Boyd’s Message (I love the academic nature of Stowe’s posts and his prose) and A VC by Fred Wilson (I love Fred’s mix of personal observation and quality VC advice coupled with a niche focus on playful anecdotes like indie music and notable Manhattan public service projects).
